Tongue & Groove refers the method of fitting.

Tongue & Groove is a system whereby one board can simply lock into another by having a complimentary joinery edge that allows a tight and snug fit.

FLOAT A FLOOR. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Floating a floor is referring to the fitting method of the floor.

Floating a floor means the floor is not stuck down or nailed down during installation. The boards lock together creating a tight fit.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO FIT MY FLOOR?

Depending on your chosen floor wither its reclaimed, engineered, pre-finished or solid to name a few, price will be based accordingly.

Each type of flooring we offer requires different methods to install. Wilsons will provide you with a list of independent floor fitters on request, who will be able to provide you with a quotation.

CAN MY BUILDER INSTALL MY FLOOR?

Qualified trades persons or builders are often more than capable to lay a wooden floor. However, a professional floor fitter will have a better knowledge and experience of laying wooden floors. Board placement is very important so each board compliments each other once laid; this is often overlooked by non-professional floor fitters.  A qualified floor fitter will be aware of the correct climatic conditions in which your floor should be fitted and how to properly acclimatise your flooring which is crucial to avoid gapping. Wilsons always recommend using a qualified floor fitter.

SOLID WOOD FLOORING & UNDERFLOORING HEATING?

Using solid wood flooring with underfloor heating is often disregarded due to the availability of new engineered wood with its stable properties.

New wood solid flooring can be used but strict guidelines must be adhered to avoid cupping and gapping.

Reclaimed wood flooring has weather over many years and is a lot drier than new wood flooring, again strict guidelines still apply to avoid cupping and gapping.

At Wilsons we have a dedicated flooring team that can best advise you on which floors wither solid or engineered will best suit your under-floor heating.

WILL THERE BE MOVEMENT WITH MY FLOOR?

Wood flooring is by nature a natural product depending on the climate conditions from season to season it can slightly react. For example, during the winter months in a hot and dry environment, it can cause the wood to shrink very slightly, then during different months it will expand back to its original state. This is considered normal and all good quality polymer glues allow elasticity to allow for this minimal amount of movement.

I HAVE CONCERNS USING RECLAIMED FLOORING?

Reclaimed wood flooring is unique in every way, reclaimed wood floorboards or parquet wood blocks, have a unique patina that new flooring cannot replicate. It is these imperfections and variations that makes them very much sough after.

Waxes, oils, varnishes & stains can be applied to the finish floor to help smooth out the overall look, but it will never make it look like a new wood floor.

Wilsons flooring team can discuss this with you to relive any of your concerns.

WILL I GET SCRATCHES ON MY NEW WOOD FLOOR?

Scratches to wood flooring can happen for lots of reasons. Furniture legs not protected with felts pads to the bottom, floor & door mats help prevent stones, dirt, and dust from being carried onto your new floor.

Maintenance products can be applied which will increase the lifespan & maintain the overall look for much longer.

DO I USE UNDERLAY WITH MY WOOD FLOORING?

At Wilsons we always recommend gluing directly to subfloors for any permanent wood floor project.
