Hillsborough Castle Restoration Project

Yorkstone Paving by Wilsons Yard at Hillsborough Castle

At Wilsons Yard we have been involved with some wonderful, interesting, and prestigious projects, but none more so than when we were asked to undertake work at Hillsborough Castle, as part of a major project by Historic Royal Palaces. The charity is embarking on an ambitious project to improve the visitor experience at Hillsborough Castle and open it up to the public, ready to welcome 200,000 visitors every year from 2019.

Planning

Inside the castle, the State Rooms will be restored and re-presented. Externally, new visitor facilities including car parking and a learning centre will be created, and the beautiful gardens, which cover nearly 100 acres, will also be opened up for visitors to enjoy and explore. Wilsons Yard was asked to help establish the South Terrace, one of the earliest aspects of the project to be completed.

A number of meetings were held on site at Hillsborough Castle to establish the requirements for the terrace and identify the very best stone to achieve the desired look. After careful consideration, Wilsons Yard recommended that reclaimed Yorkstone flagstones, with a natural warmth and light textured appearance would be ideal and would work perfectly with the existing buildings. It was agreed that the stone would have a nicely aged look and therefore must come from a single salvage project to ensure continuity; always a challenge when large volumes of reclaimed paving are required.

Timescales were agreed and plans were jointly put in place by Wilsons Yard and Historic Royal Palaces. A very talented local landscape gardener Brian Kerr (Garden Innovations) who was experienced in working with reclaimed Yorkstone flagging was recommended by Wilsons Yard and the work was ready to commence. Approximately 8 weeks later the hard landscaping was finished and the Hillsborough Castle gardening team took over in order to put in place their planting schemes and naturalise the project.
