  • How to lay reclaimed Parquet flooring

    Laying Reclaimed Parquet Flooring

As with most things, when you know how to do it, and have the right tools and materials, fitting reclaimed parquet / woodblock flooring is relatively simple process.

We appreciate that sometimes customers can feel a little daunted with the thought of putting down reclaimed parquet / woodblock flooring.

All these little pieces of timber arrive and its difficult to imagine how they will ever come together to make an amazing floor.  So, we thought we would share a little video with you, of a recent project (The Cape table & Interiors Holywood) that we were delighted to be involved with.

    Environment

With so much pressure on the worlds natural forests, the client decided  to go for a Eco friendly, rich, interesting  East African parquet floor,  salvaged from Windmill Bookstore in Lytham St Annes.

    The finish

The reclaimed parquet floor was not overly reworked to ensure that it was left with a casual and timeless look.

We think the project looks amazing and its difficult to believe that this flooring has not been in place for decades.

    Hope you enjoy the video.

    Geoff

PS Once again, thanks to folks at The Cape Table & Interiors Holywood (www.capetable.com) and Campbell Flooring fitting

  • Bespoke Dressers & Book Cases

A customer recently admired one of our hand painted dressers but dimensions simply did not work for her.

We sat down and designed a bespoke dresser that suited the scale, style and colour scheme of her property. We also designed and produced a large oak topped dining table to tie in with the partially glazed dresser / bookcase

Hope that you like these pieces and if you would like us to design a bespoke dresser or book case for you, then just call us on 02892692304 (Int. 0044 (0) 2892692304) for a chat and an estimate.

Here is a link to other styles dresser and bookcase.

  • Dramatic Crystal Chandeliers

We work with lots of hotels, retailers and the public to help them find items to create the look they desire.

I was recently invited to a meeting with one of our customers – The Merchant Hotel Belfast, to discuss some future projects and review others that we had been involved in.

I thought this beautiful Florentine chandelier, matched with a traditional “old masters” style oil painting was an amazing combination. It just was the epitome of style and sophistication, which is what the Merchant Hotel is all about.

So if you would like to create this classical opulent look then why not check out our lighting for that special piece.

  • Using Reclaimed scaffolding planks to make a raised vegetable patch

With spring just about on us, lots of us are all starting to think about getting out into the garden.

I have been watching a repeat of good old Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s  show on TV  and he was making  raised vegetable patches with reclaimed scaffolding planks.

Some friends of ours did this a couple of years ago and get a lot of pleasure out of it plus nice fresh vegetables.

Just like Hugh, they said it was really simple to do and that the reclaimed scaffolding planks are really sturdy, look great  and will last for ages.

If anyone is looking to find reclaimed scaffolding boards to make a raised vegetable garden let them know that we have a quantity of really good, sound, reclaimed scaffolding planks in stock at Wilsonsyard.

So if you fancying starting a project and having fresh salad during the summer, well now is the time to act.

  • Where to Source Well Seasoned Timber & Joinery Products

    Bespoke Joinery and more...

Here at Wilsons we have a wide range of clientele and over the past 20 years we have been able to provide the perfect arena in which specialist joiners / carpenters come to select that well seasoned piece of antique timber for their project.

One such project was the conference table at Farmleigh house, made by Breffni Ireland Ltd, who have been choosing Wilsons timber for many years. I think you will agree it’s a beautiful piece of workmanship, achieved by using quality well seasoned reclaimed timber.

Farmleigh, an estate of 78 acres situated to the north-west of Dublin's Phoenix Park, was purchased from the Guinness family by the Irish Government in 1999 for €29.2m. The house has been carefully refurbished by the Office of Public Works as the premier accommodation for visiting dignitaries and guests of the nation, Government meetings and for public enjoyment

  • Vintage Time Recording Machine From Harland & Wolff Belfast

Original Time Clock From Harland & Wolff Drawing Office

Every so often we come across something that we consider to be truly exceptional. This may be due to its quality, age, history, uniqueness / rarity etc

Well recently we bought what we consider to be an exceptional item. It’s an original early 20th century Time Recording Machine by Blick of London. It’s truly an iconic design, similar to the original IBM time Machines. It came from the drawing office of Harland & Wolff Ship builders in Belfast – the builders of the Titanic and so many other iconic vessels.

I find this so interesting in so many ways. Firstly it’s just an amazing looking piece with its ornate cast Iron framing, clock dials, punch numbers and old oak case. It’s obvious that this item has been used which just ads to the piece. Then the fact that it has been an important machine (if you didn’t clock in, you didn’t get paid) and used for so long  by people who have been instrumental in designing and building some of the most iconic ships of the 20th century, such as the Titanic, HMS Belfast and SS Canberra, to name but a few.

So give us a call if you are interested in Industrial art or history, Harland & Wolff, Historical items from Belfast, Vintage or antique Time recording Clocks or simply would like an amazing looking piece in your office office

  • Shop display ideas / alternative wall paneling

If you are searching for something different to use as a wall covering or to make a feature wall then how about this!

When out shopping I came across this stunning wall display, such a simple idea with a dramatic result. It is a beautiful reclaimed parquet woodblock attached to a wall in a basket weave style. I was so impressed I asked the owner more about it, he was able to tell me the block was called Mninga (A type that Wilsons Yard stock) but any of our reclaimed woodblock flooring could be used in theory.

This got me thinking! Where else could a look such as this work… Perhaps a feature wall in your home, for instance behind a fabric headboard or in a boutique hotel, funky apartment, shop and boutique displays, restaurant or smart café. The list is long...... You can also attach the block in lots of different patterns to create your own individual look. Here are a few options.

It has certainly inspired me, I hope its gave you a few ideas.

Feel free to view our parquet range, we have lots of different parquet and woodblock to choose from at Wilsonsyard.com and can deliver anywhere in the UK, Ireland and throughout Europe. You can reach me on 028 92 692304 (Int 0044 2892692304).
