I was recently invited to a meeting with one of our customers – The Merchant Hotel Belfast, to discuss some future projects and review others that we had been involved in.

I thought this beautiful Florentine chandelier, matched with a traditional “old masters” style oil painting was an amazing combination. It just was the epitome of style and sophistication, which is what the Merchant Hotel is all about.

With spring just about on us, lots of us are all starting to think about getting out into the garden.

I have been watching a repeat of good old Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s  show on TV  and he was making  raised vegetable patches with reclaimed scaffolding planks.

Some friends of ours did this a couple of years ago and get a lot of pleasure out of it plus nice fresh vegetables.

Just like Hugh, they said it was really simple to do and that the reclaimed scaffolding planks are really sturdy, look great  and will last for ages.

Farmleigh, an estate of 78 acres situated to the north-west of Dublin's Phoenix Park, was purchased from the Guinness family by the Irish Government in 1999 for €29.2m. The house has been carefully refurbished by the Office of Public Works as the premier accommodation for visiting dignitaries and guests of the nation, Government meetings and for public enjoyment

Every so often we come across something that we consider to be truly exceptional. This may be due to its quality, age, history, uniqueness / rarity etc

Well recently we bought what we consider to be an exceptional item. It’s an original early 20^th century Time Recording Machine by Blick of London. It’s truly an iconic design, similar to the original IBM time Machines. It came from the drawing office of Harland & Wolff Ship builders in Belfast – the builders of the Titanic and so many other iconic vessels.

I find this so interesting in so many ways. Firstly it’s just an amazing looking piece with its ornate cast Iron framing, clock dials, punch numbers and old oak case. It’s obvious that this item has been used which just ads to the piece. Then the fact that it has been an important machine (if you didn’t clock in, you didn’t get paid) and used for so long  by people who have been instrumental in designing and building some of the most iconic ships of the 20th century, such as the Titanic, HMS Belfast and SS Canberra, to name but a few.

When out shopping I came across this stunning wall display, such a simple idea with a dramatic result. It is a beautiful reclaimed parquet woodblock attached to a wall in a basket weave style. I was so impressed I asked the owner more about it, he was able to tell me the block was called Mninga (A type that Wilsons Yard stock) but any of our reclaimed woodblock flooring could be used in theory.

This got me thinking! Where else could a look such as this work… Perhaps a feature wall in your home, for instance behind a fabric headboard or in a boutique hotel, funky apartment, shop and boutique displays, restaurant or smart café. The list is long…… You can also attach the block in lots of different patterns to create your own individual look. Here are a few options.

It has certainly inspired me, I hope its gave you a few ideas.

  I bumped into a chap in the yard recently and we got around to talking about parquet flooring.

He told me that he had recently bought some reclaimed oak parquet from Wilsons and showed me some pictures on his phone. I asked if he would mind if I did a little blog on his experience. He kindly sent the following in:-

We spoke briefly about the reclaimed floor that I got form Wilsons Yard and here is something for your blog which might help other weekend DIYers who would like to tackle fitting parquet themselves.

The floor is laid in the downstairs toilet and cloakroom of our 1930's house in Bangor. I am a competent DIYer but this was my first time laying reclaimed parquet flooring – I love it!

Here are a few pictures that show the process.

The blank canvas before fitting - making sure that floor is level and completely dry

Here is a picture of it before I sanded it back and it looks like a dogs dinner but I didn’t panic!

I then gave it a sanding but without over doing it.

Didn’t want any gaps between the pieces so filled all gaps with a filler and sandings

Then finished of with a varnish.  Its perfect in my view and retains much of its old character, unlike new parquet We just love it.

There is just something rich and interesting about vintage leather. Its not perfect and may be marked, but its history and its depth of colour make it so interesting.

So if you are looking for an interesting coffee table, then you could consider using old leather suitcases stacked on top of each other or a large travel trunk – if you are lucky enough to find one. Both double up as a storage units, where you could hide away magazines, games or kids toys etc
