    Planning for 2017 tips

Whilst you may not be an award winning garden designer like Duirmuid Gavin, however one thing common to any successful garden designer is planning.

As I write this blog its may be Early Winter,  but this is a really good time to start planning any  garden landscaping project for next year.  Hard landscaping and construction can take place during the bleaker months, so that you can plant out and enjoy the fruits of your efforts next spring and summer.

Its also worth taking into consideration that at this time of year, that you can often get better deals on what are classes as summer materials, so its a good time to buy products such as:-

    • Reclaimed York Stone
    • Water features and fountains
    • Paving and edging
    • Fencing and Gates
    • Garden seating

Why not checkout our this BBC clip of Durmiud Gavan's wonderful garden creation shot earlier this year. Hopefully it will give you a little inspiration

Wilsons Yard  are widely recognised for stocking the finest reclaimed York stone flag stone, plus lots of other natural stone paving and cobbles.

Below is an extract from the magazine saying a little bit about Wilsons Yard

"Wilsons Conservation Building Products (Wilsons Yard) are widely recognised as one of the United Kingdom and Ireland’s premier architectural salvage and design businesses. We profile this dynamic and professional firm and explore how it came to win this prestigious accolade.

Wilsons Yard is a family business that has been built up over the past four decades. Living up to its company slogan, “Purveyors of the unusual” the firm offers a vast selection of reclaimed and sustainable materials which is arguably the biggest in the UK and Ireland. Owners Geoffrey and Rosie Wilson pride themselves in the diverse nature of the business; catering for both commercial and private customers wishing to find interesting, individual yet functional items to build into their homes or businesses.

Best Architectural Salvage Yard 2016 - UK & Ireland

With a reputation for supplying quality materials, the business has continually expanded year on year. Wilsons Yard combines two main areas:

Structural “build in” items such as reclaimed flooring, reclaimed Bangor blue slates, salvaged bricks, restored cast iron radiators, reclaimed paving etc.

A decorative side, supplying anything from vintage, Industrial Urban and antique items, Industrial lighting, reclaimed wall cladding, tables and more.

The business has become a must visit site for commercial architects, interior designers, shop fitters, creative individuals and Entrepreneurs who wish to embrace sustainability whilst using interesting individual products. Customers are as varied as international chains such as Urban Outfitters, corporations such as Google, Historic Royal Palaces plus the general public. Whilst many may not have visited Wilsons, there is a significant chance that you have seen products sourced from Wilsons Yard in restaurants, boutiques, shops or cafes that you will have visited.

    Best salvage yard 2016

With architectural salvage being a relatively new phenomenon, one of the biggest challenges has always been the firm’s ability to get across our message to the general public as to what products and services it provides.

To address this, Wilsons Yard have developed a user-friendly website to act as a window which shows the majority of products and give potential customers an overview of the firm and its offerings.

The other challenge is that Designers and shop fitters do not actually share with others where that they get their materials from, they keep Wilsons Yard as their own ‘secret supplier’ (one of the best kept secrets in the UK). This highlights the firm’s excellence and, ultimately, why the firm makes the ideal supplier of construction, fit out and design materials.

With all of this it's not hard to see why Wilsons Yard is the Best Architectural Salvage Yard 2016 - UK & Ireland"

  • Old Whiskey Barrels!! Its Whiskey Galore at Wilsonsyard

    Old Whiskey barrels

    dsc05602

Great find of old whiskey barrels

There has been a real shortage of old whiskey barrels for the last few years, so when we were offered a large batch straight from the distillery, we jumped at the chance. Our yard now looks like a backdrop to an old Whiskey Galore movie

    glenffidich_distilleryrlh1979_dufftown_speyside_scotland

The salvaged whiskey barrels came from the world renowned Scottish distillery "Glenfiddich".  Having stored whiskey during there lifespan, most of these reclaimed whiskey barrels contain just a little whisky that has seeped back out of the oak timbers. In fact, you can hear it swishing around inside when you move some of the old barrels.  Obviously any whiskey residue wont be safe to drink due to contamination, nevertheless,  the smell is absolutely delightful and a real talking point for those who have came to buy them

Potential uses for Old whiskey barrels

These old oak barrel have a beautiful weathered aged appearance and are cheep to buy. They are ideal for gardeners to plant with potting plants or set baskets on, but other than garden planters, what else do people use old wooden barrels for? Well frankly all sorts.

  • Hillsborough Castle Restoration Project

Wilsons Yard - Hillsborough Castle Restoration Project

Hillsborough Castle Restoration Project Yorkstone Paving by Wilsons Yard at Hillsborough Castle

At Wilsons Yard we have been involved with some wonderful, interesting, and prestigious projects, but none more so than when we were asked to undertake work at Hillsborough Castle, as part of a major project by Historic Royal Palaces. The charity is embarking on an ambitious project to improve the visitor experience at Hillsborough Castle and open it up to the public, ready to welcome 200,000 visitors every year from 2019.

    Planning

Inside the castle, the State Rooms will be restored and re-presented. Externally, new visitor facilities including car parking and a learning centre will be created, and the beautiful gardens, which cover nearly 100 acres, will also be opened up for visitors to enjoy and explore. Wilsons Yard was asked to help establish the South Terrace, one of the earliest aspects of the project to be completed.

A number of meetings were held on site at Hillsborough Castle to establish the requirements for the terrace and identify the very best stone to achieve the desired look. After careful consideration, Wilsons Yard recommended that reclaimed Yorkstone flagstones, with a natural warmth and light textured appearance would be ideal and would work perfectly with the existing buildings. It was agreed that the stone would have a nicely aged look and therefore must come from a single salvage project to ensure continuity; always a challenge when large volumes of reclaimed paving are required.

    Hillsborough Castle Restoration Project

Timescales were agreed and plans were jointly put in place by Wilsons Yard and Historic Royal Palaces. A very talented local landscape gardener Brian Kerr (Garden Innovations) who was experienced in working with reclaimed Yorkstone flagging was recommended by Wilsons Yard and the work was ready to commence. Approximately 8 weeks later the hard landscaping was finished and the Hillsborough Castle gardening team took over in order to put in place their planting schemes and naturalise the project.

  • Old Cast Iron Radiators

Looking for old cast iron radiators with a bit of history?

    DSC02705

We were recently contacted by a company in Belfast that had the task of re-fitting an old historic building known as the Prudential building. They offered us ideal standard 4 column cast iron radiators (also known as Victorian neo-classic column radiators)

We were delighted as these old period cast iron radiators are getting so hard to source, and are highly sought after for restoration projects as well as new build homes because of their timeless look and efficiency, so frankly we couldn’t wait to get down and have a look at them.

    restored_neoclassic6_column

There were around 100 of these old cast iron radiators in various sizes, which was just what we wanted, so the deal was done and we arranged to get them back to Wilsons Yard.

We offer not only the Victorian period cast iron column radiators, but also have good stocks of school house and princess style cast iron radiators.

    restored_french_embossed

Wilsons old vintage radiators are fully restored and pressure tested by our engineer and are fitted with new modern plumbing parts so that they can connect to modern heating systems.

    restored_schoolhouse

If you are interested in having a cast iron radiator as a piece of urban history in your home, then why not give us a call to discuss. I am sure we will have just what you are looking for.
