Old Antique Reclaimed Wooden Pine and Oak Beams

Wilsons carry a large selection of original 18th and 19th century reclaimed wooden beams. These Oak beams, Pine beams and Douglas Fir beams were originally harvested from Native Forest stock in North America and British Columbia for the construction of the huge Wool and Linen Mills that sprang up throughout Ireland and Britain during the Industrial Revolution.

Finishes

Upon arrival at Wilsons the timber beams are sympathetically striped and sanded to bring out their original quality. We give each beam unique and special attention to bring out its character and natural colour. We do not sand the beams back to new wood, as this would loose the natural aging that has taken place.

  1. Sanded and Hand Waxed

Our most popular Finish - A Beautiful Finish. This unique process removes outer layers of paint and finishes to reveal the original grain and colour of the wood. The beam is not sanded to a ‘smooth new’ surface but rather ‘taken back’ to the state it would have arrived at its first home. A coating of wax is then applied by hand which enhances the colour and grain of the timber.
  1. Sandblasted and Hand Waxed

This unique Finish involves removing the old layers of paint and Finish by blasting the timber with sand. Some of the softer wood between the grain lines is also worn away, resulting in a rough rustic finish which highlights the overall grain. A coating of wax is then applied by hand which further enhances the grain of the timber.

Colour

Each and every individual wood beam is unique in both character and colour, therefore it is impossible to guarantee exact colour tones. The samples presented below are offered as guidelines.
  1. Natural – Original colour of antique timber with clear wax Finish
  2. Medium – Waxed to tone down the original colour.
  3. Dark – Stained to give a medieval darker look

Wooden Corbels/Beam Supports

We also carry a selection of Wooden Corbels which can be used for support and to create a Mantle Effect. Details available on request.

Installation of Beams

Depending on what you plan to use your beam for Wilsons can recommend professionals who have worked closely with us on many projects to assist you with planning and installing your beams.

Maintenance of Beams

Sanded beams can be wiped down with a damp cloth whenever you want to clean it. Sandblasted beams will require light brushing to remove dust from the grain ridges.

Wood polish can be used but no detergents or bleaches should be used on your beam.

All our beams come with a tin of specialty wax which should be applied periodically depending on how the beam is used. Typically the wax would only be applied to a decorative lintel or roof beam once a year, but you may want to apply it more often if your beam is used as a mantle or shelf and has cups or other objects in regular contact with it.
