The Alice Bear Collection - The Sanctuary

This unique piece has been cast from the artist's original sculpture. The body is Cornish stone whilst the embellishments are crafted from Cornish tin and lead.

The Latin inscription on the lead hand at the base of the monk is: "Solitarine Locus Sanctus" which translated reads "The Lonely Holy Place", hence "The Sanctuary"


The Sanctuary was influenced by Claus Sluter of Haarlem in Holland. He was the foremost sculptor of the period of 1400. His chief works were done for the Count of Burgundy. The artist has striven for both utility in purpose and beauty in design, for The Sanctuary has a secret - it can accommodate a family of blue tits in its chest!
